Hawkeye Bicycle Association has a full calendar of group rides on Saturday mornings, Sunday mornings and afternoons, and Wednesday evenings starting in June. On almost every Wednesday evening ride and on occasional Saturday and Sunday rides, the rides divide into three groups, each with its own pace and expectation for rider ability. A description of the groups is below.
ABC group rides are non-competitive, departing and returning at the same location. Keeping each group together will be the focus. ABC rides are not a race or an individual's training ride. There will be sections on the course where riders can stretch their legs (go off the front), but all will re-group at the next turn or designated re-group spot.
Re-group points for food/water will be decided at the pre-ride meeting. Each group will resume its ride and will not wait for the following group before continuing its ride. ABC no-drop rides are meant to be fun and challenging while allowing each rider to choose a pace and style they feel comfortable with. Strava maps will be available online.
This is our club’s quickest group, averaging 19+ mph. Proficiency in drafting is a must. Expect to be riding at a pace that won’t allow you to maintain a conversation.
This group averages 16-19 mph. Riders in this group should be familiar with riding in groups at a brisk pace. Conversation with fellow riders is possible. This group tends to be more intense than the C group.
This group rides at 13-15 mph. This group tends to be very social. Emphasis is on fun miles and improving cycling skills while being able to converse with fellow cyclists. This group will stop and wait for dropped riders periodically.
